Lightning Talks

Over the years, the term “lecturette” has been used to reinforce the idea that trainers should keep their lectures brief, limited to no more than 10 minutes. After that, trainers are encouraged to give their participants an opportunity to interact with the information, either to check their comprehension or allow them to test or apply what they have learned.

lightning talk is a conference presentation that, like lightning, beams a brief flash of light that strikes to the core of a discrete subject. It is a concise, clear and insightful form of communication. It is also very quick, typically 3-6 minutes and definitely no more than 10 minutes.

Because these talks are so brief, the speakers have to eliminate any non-critical information so that they can get right to the point.

This quick talks are intended to grab the attention of the audience, convey key information, and allow for several presenters to share their ideas in a brief period of time.

Some formats of lightning talk, such as PechaKucha and Ignite, limit the number of PowerPoint slides.

For example, PechaKucha limits presenters to 20 slides that are each shown for 20 seconds (for a total of 6 minutes and 40 seconds).

Ignite gives presenters five minutes to talk on a subject accompanied by 20 slides that are 15 seconds each and are automatically advanced.

Regardless of the format, lightning talks require that speakers avoid reading details from their slides. The PowerPoint is a complement to, rather than the content of the presentation.

These talks are meant to be given in sequence within the same session in a conference-style seating arrangement.

There is another type of lightning talk called speed geeking in which five- minute presentations are given simultaneously at different small tables. The participants simply move in a circular path from table to table to eventually hear all of the presentations. Audiovisuals are limited

This format is understandably harder on the speakers, since they have to keep repeating their presentations for each new table group of participants.

There is a variation on speed-geeking that moves away from this uni-directional model, in which the speed-geekers do most of the talking. RapidFeedback sets up a bi-directional exchange. The speed-geekers still speak for five minutes, but then the participants provide five minutes of feedback.

The Structure Of a Good Presentation

Great orators have always been a force to moving or influencing people. The world has seen its share of charismatic speakers that have made heads of nations, spiritual personalities, movie or music celebrities, company heads and even dictators. People are moved by the skill of a great orator or the effectiveness of his or her presentation skills. But what is it about their presentation that resonates with so many people? Or should we ask an even more important question – what is a Presentation skill?

While certain specific presentation techniques are universally common, Business Presentation Skills have a certain tried and tested method that anyone aspiring to be a good presenter in the corporate world, can learn from. In this article we will look at a few such aspects that make up the structure of a good presentation:

    1. An Agenda With a Purpose: The speaker needs to know where he or she wants to go with the presentation – what is the message that he or she wants to convey? Who is the target audience? These are questions that a presenter needs to know the answers to, well before they take the stage to give a presentation. Proceeding through a plan is much more effective if one has a map and a plan. That should be the primary objective of having an agenda.

    1. Meticulous Preparation: Regardless of the confidence of the speaker’s message, they must always prepare ahead of time to do justice to the goal of the presentation. Trying to stumble through the presentation without a plan doesn’t work and neither is it professional. The presenter must be prepared to clarify vague issues and also tackle troubleshooting questions. It also helps to arrive ahead of time in order to get a good feel for the environment.

  1. The ‘Sandwich’ Structure: Just like a sandwich, every presentation must have three distinct parts to it that requires slightly different approaches. Most speakers tend to focus only on the ‘body’ of the presentation but fail to make a good first impression or fail to end their message well once done with the body. Beginning with a good attention-grabbing introduction that makes a good impression is vital to starting off on the right note. A good opener sets the tone for a good presentation.

The body of the message is where most of the intended content is placed. The speaker must take his time in unpacking the major elements of the body in a clear and concise manner. Holding eye contact and keeping an ‘open’ body posture helps to relax the crowd and feel connected with the speaker. Often speakers rush through their presentation without proper pausing or spacing due to nervousness or haste and end up looking anxious and insecure. Well-timed pausing can be useful to the presenter and must be used tactfully to allow the depth of the content to sink in to the listeners’ minds and hearts.

Finally, ending a presentation well gives a good finishing touch to the presentation and ends with a note of closure for the listeners. If done well, the listeners will leave with a good appreciation for the value of the message. It helps to finish on a positive note while also thanking the listeners for their time and patience.

Data Science With Machine Learning

Today, technology has given birth to AI machines that have made our lives even easier. You may have experienced the wonders of AI while using social media sites, such as Google and Facebook. Many of these sites use the power of machine learning. In this article, we are going to talk about the relation between data science and machine learning. Read on.

What is Machine Learning?

Machine learning is the use of AI to help machines make predictions based on previous experience. We can say that ML is the subset of AI. The quality and authenticity of the data is representative of your model. The outcome of this step represents the data that will be used for the purpose of training.

After the assembling of data, it’s prepared to train the machines. Afterwards, filters are used to eliminate the errors and handle the missing data type conversions, normalization, and missing values.

For measuring the objective performance of a certain model, it’s a good idea to use a combo of different metrics. Then you can compare the model with the past data for testing purposes.

For performance improvement, you have to tune the model parameters. Afterwards, the tested data is used to predict the model performance in the real world. This is the reason many industries hire the services of machine learning professionals for developing ML based apps.

What is Data Science?

Unlike machine learning, data scientists use math, stats and subject expertise in order to collect a large amount of data from different sources. Once the data is collected, they can apply ML sentiment and predictive analysis to get fresh information from the collected data. Based on the business requirement, they understand data and provide it for the audience.

Data Science Process

For defining the data science process, we can say that there are different dimensions of data collection. They include data collection, modeling, analysis, problem solving, decision support, designing of data collection, analysis process, data exploration, imagining and communicating the results, and giving answers to questions.

We can’t go into the details of these aspects as it will make the article quite longer. Therefore, we have just mentioned each aspect briefly.

Machine Learning relies heavily on the available data. Therefore, they have a strong relationship with each other. So, we can say that both the terms are related.

ML is a good choice for data science. The reason is that data science is a vast term for different types of disciplines. Experts use different techniques for ML like supervised clustering and regression. On the other hand, data science is a comprehensive term that may not revolve around complex algorithms.

However, it is used to structure data, look for compelling patterns and advise decision-makers so that they can revolutionize business needs.

Switching to a Cloud-Based Staffing Software Solution

We are currently living in unusual times– so unusual it feels like we are living in one big dream. These past few weeks, the nation has needed to adjust to new norms, including “social distancing,” a term most of us have never even heard of before this all started. Companies have adjusted to 100% remote work. Some Americans are even living under “Stay at Home” orders, depending on the state they reside in. All of this has been a major adjustment for the nation and we will continue to live under these circumstances for at least the next month, as the nationwide social distancing guidelines have been extended for 30 more days.

Even though we are living under unfamiliar circumstances, one element of it remains constant: there is still work to be done. Staffing companies have candidates to place, payroll to process, and new business to gain. As we live during these unpredictable times, are you able to carry-on business as usual with the necessary safety precautions? Are you able to take your business remote without missing a beat? It is times like these, when a cloud-based staffing software solution is valued more than ever. If you haven’t made the switch yet to a cloud-based solution, here are the benefits, and it is not just in times of crises.

Ability to Work Anywhere and Increase in Productivity

The biggest advantage of a cloud-based staffing software solution is the ability to work anywhere. You can access all of your candidates, clients, contacts, and job orders no matter where you may be. Mobility is the future of recruiting-you need to be able to work anywhere, especially when you are out visiting clients. Instead of needing to go back to the office to enter notes or perhaps add a new job order, you can do it while on the go to your next client. This increases your productivity and ability to fill jobs quicker and ultimately gives you an advantage over your competition.

Not to mention, you also have the ability to work at home, especially under the conditions we are currently living in. Working remotely is simply the safest option, whether your state has implemented “Stay at Home Orders” or not. The Federal government recommends keeping gatherings to 10 people or less. A cloud-based software gives you this ability to work at home.

Note, some may argue you can still access your data remotely with your own server, however, you have to make sure your designated IT rep has setup a secure way to make a connection, such as a VPN.

Security

Security of your data is improved through a cloud solution. You may think your server is secure, but you will be surprised to hear how secure cloud data really is, if the right investments are made. What’s important to note, is that not all staffing software providers invest in the same amount of security.

One of the biggest security advantages of the cloud is that multiple safety nets are put in place to ensure no data is ever breached or lost. Cloud data is stored at facilities called “Data Centers.” Each data center is ranked by Tier ratings. A Tier 3 and 4 data center offers the most security with an uptime of approximately 99.982% and 99.995% respectively. What is uptime? It is the amount of time a server stays up and running without power issues or other problems.

Cloud data should also be stored in multiple data centers, so in the unlikely event “the cloud goes down” in one data center, your data is still backed-up and secure in another one. Note, it is important to ask software providers if your data will be stored in multiple data centers. To give you an idea of what a secure data center looks like, when you walk in you would see a large quantity of backup power sources, fingerprint access between rooms, locked cages, 24-hour monitoring and armed guards. Only a few key IT people at the software company would have access to the physical data.

In addition to the data center, back-ups are run daily. Incremental backups are made throughout the day with one full backup done at the end of each day. Upgrades are also performed without derailing operations as a server upgrade might. Everyone can continue to go about their day-to-day tasks without any pause or delay in work.

Social Media Hyde

Ahh, social media. Where from the comfort of your living room you can make your point known to millions of people. People and businesses have grown from being virtual unknowns to worldwide phenoms (think “Gangnam Style”) thanks to social media. Then there are those who fell from grace like a lead balloon (think Roseanne Barr, Anthony Weiner, or Paula Deen) because of social media. Both the rises and falls can happen swiftly and without advance warning. Sadly, it doesn’t even have to be true. Fake news travels just as fast as the truth. It just has to be tantalizing. It also doesn’t even have to go viral; a handful of viewers can see something that will alter their opinions of the person posting.

That viewer could be your current or future boss, customer, or business partner.

Before I go any further, I want to be very careful to treat this topic with respect and not take sides on any political, religious, or social issue. My goal is to shine a light on social media and how it could impact your professional livelihood, not to tell you a point of view is right or wrong.

Let’s pretend you are a businessperson who would like me as a customer. You and I have met for coffee several times and we seem to hit it off. You friend me on Facebook, wanting to get to know me better to understand how you could help solve my business problems and earn my trust in a business relationship. After we become connected on social media, I see very passionate posts from you mocking a point of view that I hold and telling people like me that we must be idiots to support such a heinous position. You then say something like, “If you believe in <fill in the blank> then unfriend me now!” As your prospective customer, I am confused by how someone who is so nice face to face (Dr. Jekyll) can be so venomous on social media, even giving an ultimatum (Mr. Hyde). I ultimately decide to not do business with you, not because you hold a particular point of view, but because you berate others who believe something different.

In looking at the above scenario, there are a few business relationship guiding principles that seem to go out the window with many on social media:

  • Not everyone thinks the same way as you.
  • Just because you have an opinion doesn’t mean the world needs to know about it.
  • When your posts are vague or generalized, you leave it up to the reader to decide what you meant, which could be quite different from what you meant to convey.
  • You can be denied a job because of questionable social media posts. According to a survey sponsored by The Manifest, 90% of employers look at potential employees’ social media profiles and 79% have rejected a candidate based on what they found.
  • If you’re trying to sell an idea or convince people to act a certain way, you shouldn’t do it by telling them what an idiot they are.

I want to illustrate this last point. Imagine walking into a car dealer and the salesperson greets you at the door. You tell him you want to buy a car and he asks you what you’re currently driving. You take him out to your car and he proceeds to tell you how ugly the car is and what a fool you are for driving such a repulsive vehicle. Do you view this person as credible and want to buy a car from him? I’d venture to say not a chance. Yet this is what I see over and over again on social media. People rip other points of view to shreds and berate all who believe in those views, rather than simply extolling the positive benefits of their own view.

Becoming Timeless: Bowie, the Beatles, and Apple

David Bowie existed before Ziggy Stardust, but it was Ziggy Stardust that put him on the map. The striking, glam costume; the red hair; the over-the-top Spiders from Mars tour-all these elements, plus, of course, the music, shot David Bowie into stardom. But the glam rock era eventually faded. And if David Bowie had stayed there, he would have been solely of that time, and faded along with it.

Instead, as we’re mourning the death of David Bowie, we’re also celebrating him as one of the giants of rock music. He is not “of a time.” He is timeless. Why is that?

It’s because David Bowie never stopped innovating.

See, Ziggy Stardust was a brilliant innovation. But it was just one of many. The Thin White Duke. The Berlin era. New wave and electronica. (If these mean nothing to you, take a quick visit to Wikipedia to see just how much this man did. Oh, and listen to his music.)

If Bowie had stopped with Ziggy Stardust, his obituary would have been “page 6” news. Instead, it was on the front pages of newspapers (and websites) around the world.

If the Beatles had stopped after making the Hard Day’s Night album and movie, they would have still been an important, 60s rock and roll band. They would have been “of that time.” But they went on to make Sgt. Pepper, The White Album, and Abbey Road-and in doing so, became timeless.

If Apple had done nothing but bring out the Mac computer in 1984, their place in the history of computing would have been assured. But they went on to create the iPod, the iPhone, and the iPad. Today they are the most valuable company in the world.

Many leaders seem to think that one innovation is all it takes. That one great idea, the one that propels you into the lead. And one innovation is great! Most people never even make it that far. But here’s the thing:

One innovation puts you on the map; continuous innovation lets you re-draw the map.

In a 2003 interview, David Bowie said that he considered himself to be primarily a writer. Not a performer-a writer. And when you think about it, what is the job of a writer?

To create.

What can you learn from David Bowie, and the Beatles, and Apple?

Leather Hides Upholstery

Leather hides is a general term for tanned animal hides. There are various types of leather hides. Each type of leather serves a different purpose in the process of leather crafting. The art of leather crafting ranges from stylish clothes to chews for pets and many other leather supplies.

Cowhide which is tanned with different types of vegetables is tanned with their chemicals and colors. Vegetables are helpful in shinning the leather, and the tannins and tree bark are used for making the cowhide tougher. Various colors in leather are made from different colored vegetables. Leather hides are sold according to the different shades of the color brown.

Once the tanned cow skin is supple, it can be used for binding books, leather carving or leather stamping. If the leather becomes wet, the vegetable tanning becomes discolored, and the leather may shrink or become even harder.

Aniline leather is high quality product which is used for making clothes. It is obtained by the treatment of full grain leather. Leather hides which are made for sale are being treated with aniline which makes them perfect and soft. Such hides are then used in jackets and other garments. Aniline can also be used in conjunction with dyes which can cover imperfections seen in hides.

Patent leather is always known for its ultra-shinny gloss finish. Patent leather was invented by Newark, a New Jersey inventor from Seth Boyden, in the year 1818. The original process involved the leather being coated with a linseed-based lacquer. Today, patent leather contains a plastic coating. Patent leather supplies can be used for various fashion goods such as purses, wallets, shoes, rain boots, coats, etc.

Rawhide is leather which is not tanned. The hide is shaped by making it wet. Rawhide converts into the shape in which it is dried. Rawhide is used today as chews for pet dogs. Rawhide is a popular material for drum heads. It can be made water-resistant by applying oil on it.

Nubuck and suede are a part of full grain leather. Nubuck is made from the top grain which is the top most part of the hide, whereas, suede is made from the inner side of the hide.

The Timeless Handmade Jewelry

Jewelry has always been essential to people who loves to accessorize. One special piece can make such a difference in the presentation of same outfit. There are so many different variations and handmade jewelry stands out because of its uniqueness. Beaded, carved, filigreed, engraved, sequined, knitted, and painted, various techniques for handicraft arts have been continually developed in all cultures throughout time, which certainly expand the variety of handmade jewelry.

Handmade jewelry makers utilize many types of metals and gemstones in their work, such as brass, copper, silver, gold; and crystal, quartz, turquoise, coral and amethyst. Many contemporary jewelry artists make use of even more diverse materials such as glass beads, fabric, acrylic as well as organic /natural material such as wood, leather, shell, hemp, raffia grass, animal horns, bones and even teeth. In fact jewelry made of these materials gains more and more in popularity.

ompare to mass-produced jewelry, handmade jewelry involves much more with culture, humanity and history. Most handmade jewelry has a certain ethnic flair. Or I should say, most culture has their own unique handmade tribal jewelry. Miao, for instance, an ethnic group at South West China, is well-known for their amazing women’s 20+ kg silver costume jewelry set as well as their extraordinary craftsmanship on silver jewelry making. Although Miao silver (a combination of nickel and copper) is utilized as a more affordable alternative nowadays, the popularity of Miao handmade hairsticks and accessories is still increasing because of their varied and creative designs. Tibetan handmade jewelry, on the other hand, featured bold styles and dramatic colors. The styles are versatile enough for you to find “go anywhere” pieces to wear with anything from jeans to evening dress. Thanks to the convenience of internet, I have collected native American cuffs, African leather necklace, Tibetan style beaded turquoise and coral bracelets, Miao hair jewelry sets, Indian Kundan necklace and earrings, and oriental carved lacquer and Cloisonné hairsticks, with some simple clicks of mouse. My biggest surprise was a piece of one-of-an-kind refractory porcelain hair stick. The exquisitely handmade flowers look so real and almost too pretty to wear.

Finding a gift for loved ones or special events such as bridal shower is never easy. If you want to make an unforgettable present, you might want to consider handmade jewelry. My friend Maggie, a pretty and smart girl, bought dozens of Tibetan silver cuffs studded with gemstones for her bridal shower. “How many times will a woman want to wear identical stuff as somebody else’s?” She said. How true! Her gift turned out to be a “bomb” on that day!

Price is always the concern. The price for handmade jewelry varies in a large range depending on the material, craftsmanship and sometimes brands. The most important thing to remember when shopping for handmade jewelry is that you are looking for uniqueness. It does not have to expensive or made of precious material. It is the style that catches you and others eyes. Also, while the internet made it easy for us to shop at home, it also provides means for us to compare styles and prices, as well as searching for best deals such as free shipping, on-sale and coupons.

Fundraising Ideas for a Service Dog

If you’re in the process of obtaining a Service Dog, one of the first things you should start thinking about is fundraising since this investment can cost thousands of dollars. The cost of these animals greatly depends on the program – some of them are free for qualified, low income families, but the free ones generally have waiting lists that could take years before you’re matched with a dog.

The average Service Dog costs between $20-$30k with the program asking the handler to cover about $10-$15k of the cost (depending on the program). This is a huge amount of money to many families and individuals who are desperately hoping for help. Some people even get discouraged by the cost and give up trying to get one of these dogs altogether.

While it may seem impossible, there are many ways to raise the needed money but it’s important to make sure that you’re able to financially own a dog and can take on all the responsibilities after you’ve obtained your match.

If you know that you can financially afford a dog, here are several fundraising ideas to offset the cost of the Service Dog’s training:

– Friends & Family – Most people will start asking friends and family for support. You can create a gofundme.com or firstgiving.com account and post it to Facebook & social media describing your situation and ask if anyone is able to help you.

– Donations Jar – Create flyers explaining your situation and attach them to a jar. Ask local businesses, schools, and churches if you can place the donations jar on a counter where visitors regularly visit that you’ll come pick up weekly.

– Sell something hand crafted – Create little keychains, braided bracelets, dog collars, anything that’s very simple to create and doesn’t cost much money along with little info cards about your situation. Then go to local businesses (malls, grocery stores, airports, festivals) passing out your handcrafted items asking people for donations. People respond well this as they feel like they’re getting something in return along with helping someone out.
